What buccal massage is

Buccal massage is facial massage performed partly from inside the mouth. With a gloved hand working inside the cheek and the other hand outside, the muscles of the jaw and mid-face can be held from both sides at once.

The intraoral approach allows areas around the cheeks and jaw to be worked from a different angle than external facial massage.

Buccal massage is offered as a beauty and relaxation treatment. It is not a treatment for TMJ dysfunction, bruxism or an underlying medical condition. Ongoing jaw pain, clicking, headaches or dental concerns should be discussed with a GP, dentist or physiotherapist.

What happens in the room at Atlas

The appointment begins with a conversation about your skin, comfort and preferences. Every treatment is provided one-on-one in a private room for the duration of your booked appointment.

The face is cleansed first, then external facial massage may be used before the buccal work begins one side at a time with gloved hands and controlled pressure.

Most people find the first minute unfamiliar and the rest surprisingly settling. You can ask for less pressure at any point, and you will be told what is coming before it happens.

The gradual approach for first-timers

At a first appointment the buccal work is deliberately kept shorter and lighter. Where tension is held it can feel intense, so we build up rather than diving straight in.

Pressure and pace are adjusted to your comfort each time. You can ask for the technique to be changed or stopped at any point.

Who it suits

Some clients choose buccal massage because they notice a feeling of muscular tension around the cheeks or jaw, or because they enjoy hands-on facial massage.

Some clients find that it helps ease the feeling of muscular tension and leaves the face feeling more relaxed. It does not treat TMJ dysfunction, bruxism or an underlying medical condition.
